books being read right now: "the secret society of demolition writers" edited by marc parent, jacket claims "in the spirit of the demolition derby, where drivers take heedless risks with reckless abandon, welcome to the first convocation of the Secret Society of Demolition Writers. Here is a one-of-a-kind collection by famous authors writing anonymously - and dangerously (this is where I cringe)" it goes on like this for 2 very long paragraphs which I'll skip unless, say, I'm stuck for something to read while waiting for the subway tonight...I'm just happy to have a new offutt story to read along with aimee bender and benjamin cheever et al...about halfway through & so far & not much trouble identifying the authors - at least of the pieces that don't suck...also in the backpack is the "2005 prize issue" of the Mississippi Review...I'm on page 92 of 150 and so far, I only like, FJ Bergmann's "Guns, Butter", Charles Yu's "Realism" & thought Jennifer Pashley's "98 Brightness" had some good points...rotating between backpack, floor and nightstand both 2003 and 2004's "American nonrequired reading" - mostly good things to say about both collections, rereading "Jesus Son" (oh shutup - it's been at LEAST a year & I gave it to a close friend to read, he's making comments and I want to be able to give informed responses); also trying to read "the wind up bird chronicle" but keep getting distracted by a stack of comic books some boy sent me (thanks!), yet another Ian Rankin "Rebus" mystery & "No Country for Old Men" (for those of you who are dead or at the very least asleep, Cormac McCarthy has a new book out, which for me is more exciting than say, a new "Sandman" comic & definitely more exciting than the Second Coming), I won't even bother to say that this book is, of course, light years better than anything else I'm currently reading. I will give an aside that I once knew a VERY handsome & talented young man indeed who let slip once that he found Cormac McCarthy's sentences "annoying and pretentious"...as the marvelettes once said, there are always more fish in the sea, there is only one Cormac McCarthy [okay, so they didn't add the bit about McCarthy]...also gradually getting through "the Omnibus of American Poetry" (or at least I think that's what it's called - the cat ate the dustjacket so the title is now obscured) & various recent issues of lit. journals, the new FUGUE and latest TIN HOUSE most promising in the pile - but maybe they just have the prettiest covers...recent films worthy of mention: BATMAN BEGINS (I do so love all things Batman...even fancy english boy Christian Bale's attempt)...MURDERBALL (actually lives up to the hype)...GUNNER PALACE - not such a recent view but worthy of mention now it's out on DVD. It's perhaps one of the better war docs I've seen in a long time though REGRET TO INFORM is also VERY worthy of the 2 hours out of your life as is THE BROOKLYN CONNECTION [part of the POV series of documentaries] & of course, the much hyped BORN INTO BROTHELS...on the disposable lit a/k/a magazine front, the only things I'm reading right now (other than the lit. journals) are NAT'L GEOGRAPHIC ADVENTURE & BACKPACKER which have become my porn since I'd much rather be trekking in andulsia or climbing in the dolomites than stuck in another sweaty, stench-ridden NYC summer...I also still somehow have a comped subscription to WIZARD which means I get hot drawings of Wolverine & Batman in my mailbox almost every month & honestly, what more does a girl really need?
skipping this month's guide to NYC - it's just too damn hot to leave the a.c. though I will say my current & constant favorite place to eat remains "Old Devil Moon" on 12th Street but only if I'm sitting in a booth.
