higher ground

higher ground.in my bones this morning
in the cat's growl & wheeze
in the way my hair curled &
curled in the way the air
hums with it and past noon
the cars pushing pushing and
the lines for water. for flashlights.
for candles and food and duct tape.
And I'm thinking of moving to
the mountains and how I would
miss the beach. the end of the land.
that draw deep within my
belly, my bones that tells me
better than any compass better
than any map that place
where dirt becomes sand. that
place where land becomes water
but now. today. that whispered
howl that rotation of clouds and
wind that splitting open of
the entire world leaves me
wanting to run for higher ground.
