current must see: Herzog's "GRIZZLY MAN"
Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a self-admitted film-geek & among my favorite directors (I'm tempted to use the gag-inspiring term "auteur" in his case) is Werner Herzog. Combining his story-telling ability & his wonderful "eye" with a topic as close to my heart as the North American Grizzly makes his current film, "Grizzly Man" an absolute must see. It's opening in NYC and LA & I'll post a review soon- meanwhile, here's a link to the NY TIMES review (the only movie reviews I trust outside of Film Threat)

and a couple of quotes, "Mr. Herzog is also no ordinary filmmaker. It is the rare documentary like "Grizzly Man," which has beauty and passion often lacking in any type of film, that makes you want to grab its maker and head off to the nearest bar to discuss man's domination of nature and how Disney's cute critters reflect our profound alienation from the natural order. "
"For some, Treadwell's death confirmed that animal activists and environmentalists are dangerous wackos; for others, though, his unhappy end may have suggested something equally disturbing: sometimes a smile and American goodwill aren't enough." [NY TIMES 8/12/05]
And to stave off those emails (you know who you are) suggesting that I may be swinging "right" again by suggesting that I agree with those who say that "animal activists and environmentalists are dangerous wackos"...you know that's not true...though I fully believe that if you step into a Grizzly feeding ground, optimism is NOT going to keep you from getting eaten & the Grizzly has every right to do so.
And while we're on the topic of bears, go here to protest the New Jersey Bear Hunt.
Urge New Jersey Governor to Halt Black Bear Hunt
As you may know, the black bear hunt in New Jersey is scheduled to begin on December 6. Several groups and organizations, including PETA, are collaborating to stop this year’s hunt. We need your help!
PETA has just learned that a member of the New Jersey Assembly, Michael J. Panter, has sent a letter to Acting Governor Richard J. Codey requesting an executive order banning this year’s black bear hunt. He is also requesting the Governor’s support in expediting bills that will clarify New Jersey’s position on bear hunts. As a result, a petition has been set up to support Assemblyman Panter’s call for an executive order. Without this order, the hunt will begin on December 6.
Please take a moment to sign the petition and show your support for New Jersey Black Bears. Forward the link to the petition to family and friends and urge them to sign it too: http://www.petitiononline.com/bearsnj/petition.html
